LaV Care Programs Expansion to Sir Willliam Osler
LaV Care Programs Update - June 02-2015
Transcript from Michael Lea of Town Hall meeting held at Kelvin High School Tuesday May 26, 2015
Thank you to Michael Lea for his live posts of the Town Hall. Below is the transcript.
May 21, 2015
The Executive of the Community Council and LaV Care Programs Committee met on Wednesday May 20 to discuss the next steps after the decision that was given to us by the School Board Trustees on May 11th.
We sent our survey to get an understanding of our families’ opinions on the decision to move. The survey is closing on Thursday May 21st but based on early results, our families are not happy with the decision of moving the N-1 of LaV to Sir William Osler. While this was not an option on the original PRA survey and we feel blindsided by the Trustees, we are determined to work with the staff and administrators to ensure the needs and safety of our school community are met.
A meeting was held with administration, staff and two executive council members to gather what would be required of the transition committee so we can move forward with that initiative. This committee will focus on ensuring a smooth and successful transition to Sir William Osler for staff, parents and children of LaV. We are looking for up to 4 volunteers to be on this committee. The committee will also include school and division staff. If you are interested, please email [email protected] with your name before Tuesday May 26th so we can ensure enough time to select members before the next meeting on June 3rd. It is expected that the transition committee will meet every two weeks from 4-6 pm. An end date for the committee work has not been determined yet as there is a substantial amount of work to do.
As always, the Community Council will send regular updates to parents and seek feedback on issues so that all parents have an opportunity to have their voices, concerns and suggestions heard. There has also been a website created for the Community Council and will be used to get information to our families; http://lavcommcouncil.weebly.com .
The Executive and Care Committee would especially like to thank Mme. Warnke and all of the LaV teachers and admin staff for the time and commitment they have displayed in advocating for the needs of our students and families.
Mme. Warnke sent out a letter to parents that indicates how the space at both schools will be used. LaV will once again have standalone library, music and resource rooms. The Osler site will also have these standalone rooms for students.
There will be tours of Osler scheduled for next week and the week after the town hall so that parents can see the space for themselves. The play structure at LaV that is closest to the gym will be transported to Osler and set up for the kids. This was already going to be removed because of the gym construction so it’s nice to see it’s being repurposed instead of stored away.
Families with children in grades N-1 next year can expect to see a form come home in the next week or so from the school regarding planning for transportation to and from Sir William Osler for September 2015. The scheduling needs are being completely re-vamped so this information needs to get back to the school in a timely manner.
The Care Programs Committee is looking into possibly having Kindercare at Osler and LaV as well as having Before & After at both locations as well. The Care Programs manager will be asking all Nursery, Kindergarten and Grade One families their preferences by email. This will ensure that we will be providing our families with the care required at both sites if necessary.
The Town Hall at Kelvin High School is on Tuesday May 26th 7pm. At our meeting with administration earlier yesterday, we let them know that parents are extremely disappointed with the decision and they need to come prepared with concrete information and plans. Thank you to all the parents who have been voicing their concerns. The WSD administration is now beginning to understand the magnitude of the problem they have created for us and will hopefully come to the table through the transition committee with a willingness to hear what we would like to see happen at both sites and also with some specific plans for the long-term needs of our school and the larger community.
If there are any questions or comments, please email [email protected]. This email has come from the Executive of Community Council and Care Programs Committee and we would be happy to address your questions and concerns.
Thank you,

Minutes from meeting May 14th with Trustee Mark Waslyiw and Superintendent Pauline Clarke.
May 14, 2015
Dear LaVérendrye Families,
Late Monday, May 11, the Winnipeg School Division issued a press release stating that starting in September 2015 École LaVérendrye would be split and have two locations. N-1 students would be located at Sir William Osler School and grade 2-6 students would be in our current school.
Details about transportation, childcare and continuity with our current school have been vague.
This decision was not an option that was presented during the recent surveys and focus groups of families in our community.
Your Community Council would like to get a sense of what our families feel about this decision. The council would like to present these results back to our school community and to the Division.
We are asking that each family with one household complete the online survey once. If you are a two household family, please complete the survey twice (once in each household). This survey is for our parent/guardian/staff community only – not for the larger community.
In order to present the information back to the Division prior to the May 26, 2015, Town Hall meeting at Kelvin High School, the survey will be available from Thursday, May 14 to Thursday, May 21 at 10 pm.
Please complete the LaVérendrye Parent Survey by clicking on this hyperlink. The survey should take less than 5 minutes to complete.
